8th & 9th Grades

Confirmation Program Overview

St. Pauls UCC offers a two-year Confirmation Program beginning in year one with students entering the eighth grade and continuing through the ninth grade in year two. A student entering this program is not signing on to be confirmed, but rather is signing on to the process. The decision of whether to join the church through the Rite of Confirmation is made at the end of the process. It is the goal of this program to connect students to the church and church community. Students are expected to complete the following requirements in order to be confirmed as a member of St. Pauls UCC.

Church Experiences

Students can choose at least 5 experiences from the list below to complete over the course of the year. At the completion of each experience, students need to fill out a worksheet to show that they engaged in the experience. Additional experiences may be offered throughout the year as opportunities arise. If a student loves an experience, they are welcome and encouraged to repeat it. However, each student must complete 5 unique experiences throughout the year.

Mentor/Student partnerships will begin at the end of Confirmation I. Students will begin to identify members of the church that they feel comfortable with and would like to have as mentors in year one by meeting with members, discussions with parents and teachers and finding church members they relate to. Part way through year one, students will provide a list of mentors they would like to possibly be paired with. Teachers and Pastor Sarah will work to secure the mentors, perform background checks and ensure commitment over the summer.

Class Structure

Over the course of the year, 11 formal classes will be offered (see calendar below). Students must attend at least 6 of the classes. They are strongly encouraged to attend all 11 classes but this is not mandatory in order to be confirmed. On Sundays when there isn’t a formal class, teachers will be available to assist students with working through the experience checklist, filling out experience worksheets and provide videos and other materials that support formal class material.

During Confirmation II, each student will be asked to pick a talent project where each confirmand is given $20 to use to support a charity, and ask them to see how far they can stretch it. We are hoping that each confirmand will work with their mentor and possibly with other confirmands to find a cause they believe in and then use their money to further that cause.  Talent Project

After the service project has been completed, the confirmand and their mentor will need to prepare a short (5 minute) presentation to be given at the Confirmation brunch in May. We expect to hear about what was done but hope to also hear about how the project affected the confirmands and what they will take away from it. Pictures or other visual aids might be fun. We encourage you to be creative and dazzle us!
