1920's Humor

Until his retirement from editing the Bote newsletter, Pastor Rudolph John would include a column called “Signs Of Our Times," quoting humorous signs he or others had seen about town.  Here are some examples, and please keep in mind many were made by immigrants learning a new language.
•    On a restaurant - Home Made Chilli  and Hot Wienies
•    In a drug store window - OTHERS HAVE CHEATED YOU, GIVE US A CHANCE
•    On a Ferry Boat Landing in Jacksonville, FL - TAKE THE BOAT UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS
•    In a restaurant window - Artickles in this window for Sale
•    At a meat market - Spereribs 14 cnts.--Fresh Pigs Tails 11 cnts.
•    KOLE FUR SAIL HEAR - I am sure this was a German business.
•    On a street car -  OUR METHOD OF ROASTING SEALS THE RICH, NECTAR PRODUCING OILS, WHICH ARE RELEASED BY BUBBLING BOILING WATER
•    Another German business, I am sure - FLESH FORKS 25 cnts. VINE GLASSES 15 cnts.
•    A restaurant on North Ave -
o    SPESIAL SORLOIN STEAK SARADOGA POTATOES
        o    ROAST LINE OF PORK
        o    COMBINITION DENER
        o    LATUSE SALAD
        o    CORN BEEF WITH CABBEGE
•    In a home on Taylor Street - FOR SAL 2 FLOOR AND GASRENGI
•    Business not noted - DON’T KILL YOURSELF LET US DYE FOR YOU
When John retired and Pastor Pister began editing the Bote there were no more "Signs Of Our Time."
