Mission Statement

Saint Pauls United Church of Christ recognizes the uniqueness of each person as a gift of God. We uphold the worth and dignity of all individuals and welcome them into our community to share our faith, with its joys and its sorrow, regardless of race, color, age, marital status, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or physical condition. We are members "one of the other" and show active love and support for each other.

Saint Pauls Church encourages personal growth in Christian life and active involvement in the ministry of the church. Community worship is our opportunity to open ourselves to God's revelation and power, give thanks to God for our lives, and find inspiration for our spirit through words, music and action.

Saint Pauls Church believes God's love compels us to serve and witness in our community and the world. Through denominational agencies, Saint Pauls Church supports outreach ministries in local, national and international settings, in this way fulfilling our commitment to be faithful witnesses to God's love.

The United Church of Christ (UCC) Denomination

Saint Pauls is a congregation of the United Church of Christ (UCC), a denomination that was formed in 1957 through the union of the Evangelical and Reformed Synod and the Congregational Christian churches. The United Church of Christ includes many nationalities, languages and heritages.

Each congregation in the UCC structures itself in the way that best ministers to its particular community and the world. Embracing a great variety of beliefs, the UCC and Saint Pauls Church respect the right of the individual believer's conscience. At the same time, however, we celebrate our unity in fellowship and worship.

Open and Affirming

Saint Pauls is an Open and Affirming congregation, welcoming into membership and leadership all who believe in God, without regard to race, color, age, marital status, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or physical ability. Saint Pauls affirms the uniqueness of each person as a gift of God. In all we do, we impart our motto: Making a Joyful Sound in the City™.

UCC Statement of Faith

We believe in God, the Eternal Spirit, who is made known to us in Jesus our brother, and to whose deeds we testify:

  • God calls the worlds into being, creates humankind in the divine image and sets before us the ways of life and death.
  • God seeks in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin.
  • God judges all humanity and all nations by that will of righteousness declared through prophets and apostles.
  • In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen Lord, God has come to us and shared our common lot, conquering sin and death and reconciling the whole creation to its Creator.
  • God bestows upon us the Holy Spirit, creating and renewing the church and Jesus Christ, binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues, and races.
  • God calls us into the church to accept the cost and joy of discipleship, to be servants in the service of the whole human family, to proclaim the gospel to all the world and resist the powers of evil, to share in Christ's baptism and eat at his table, to join him in passion and victory.
  • God promises to all who trust in the gospel forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace, courage in the struggle for justice and peace, the presence of the Holy Spirit in trial and rejoicing, and eternal life in that kingdom which has no end.

Who We Are
St. Pauls is a vibrant, progressive, Christian community in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. We are a United Church of Christ congregation. Worship is at the heart of our life together, as we make a joyful sound in our city.

With one foot grounded in our faith history, and the other following Jesus into the 21st Century, we are a traditional church, but not conventional. We welcome diversity, and we welcome you - no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey.
